Amor Esquelético y El Corazón

January's Pillow

Done! Finished! FIN!
And a day early, I might add.

I've gotta say, I'm pretty happy with the way it came out (even though it was so extremely far off of what I had originally intended) I think the turning point was when I picked the fabric. It played a crucial role in the overall finished product.

                                                                  STOP!...Picture Time !
Front Panel [knit with crocheted vines]
Heavily pinned skeletons. What can I say, I like pins!
Sewing the Skeleton couple to their final resting place
Busy at work on the sewing machine
Front
Back
[ I am completely in love with this fabric ]
Buying more & they will become curtains
El Corazón (The Heart)

... And there you have it! The skeleton dude - or who I like to call El Corazón - is just a little something I did today while. I found him after Halloween for only 25 cents at a craft store. Today, he got some color and decoration - all thanks to Sharpie's!

I know Dia De Los Muertos [ Day of the Dead] is celebrated on November 2nd, but if you know anything about me, I love skulls, skeletons and bright colors year round!

Off to work on February's pillow.

Oh yeah! Keep checking back. I think in March [possibly April] I'm going to be giving away one of my pillows in a blog giveaway. Currently working out all the little details.

Until next time, Stay Warm - Stay Safe and Happy Crafting!!

Just Another Manic Monday

Le Sigh
... I'm beat.  It's been a long day. I guess that's what I get for staying up until 4am watching season 1 of 21 Jumpstreet. That's right my friend, not only do I love Johnny Depp, I love crappy 80's TV shows :)

What  else ? ...
OH! - While working on a project, I got a great idea that started moshing around in my brain. Unfortunately, With the things I'm working on right now, I won't be able to get started on that project until next week, possibly the week after.

I've noticed this really cool trend of people who are setting blog/crafty goals for the year:

Nerdy Together is taking this year long goal to a place that would probably end up making me insane, but she's doing it - and kicking butt. A scarf a day!!! Can you believe it?! I totally admire that commitment. Also, think it's a killer way to really flex those creative muscles  :D

PuNk rAwK pUrL  is doing this "1300 Things To Be Greatful For" - which I think is a beautiful idea. In a time where things are difficult for many people, it's a good idea to grab a moment to take a look around you and really focus on the things you're grateful for.

Going to make this. Will replace Che's face with the face of another
What I'm planning on is a Throw-Pillow-A-Month . Part of this idea came from a gift I received recently from my bestie Jessica. It's a book on intarsia, (which I have really been wanting to get better at doing.) There was a cool lookling Che Guevara pillow. My Honey has a shirt that in place of Che's face is Corey Feldman and the wallpaper on his phone is Che "Peter Griffin"  as -Hahah!

January's pillow I started today, and  I'm giving myself until Feburary 7th to have it finished completely. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with all of these pillows. A few of them, I know I'm going to keep.
Ya know, I have been wanting to do a Handmade Giveaway... Hmmm...

I just made up my mind. The month of March, I'm going to do a Handmade Giveaway !! So stay tuned!

.... and what about you, reader person? Do you have crafty goals for 2011?

Sweet Tamales, Batman!

Happy New Year! -or as they would say in my neck of the woods - Feliz Año Nuevo! That's right... occasionally Ich spreche espanol ;)

Right before I sat down to type all of this, I started thinking a lot about what this post really means to me. Not only is this the first blog post of the year, it happens to be about food - BUT - it also deals greatly with someone very dear to me that I lost in 2010 - My Grandpa. He had a long, beautiful life, and had the ability to warm the heart of anyone he met. I remember being little, going to my Grandparents house in Whittier, California. Usually, any kind of get-together required not only awesome food... but awesome AMOUNTS of food. Recipes from my family are not to be taken lightly. They are time capsules, little tasty pockets of memory. They require not only heart, but a great deal of soul, sweat, tears and most importantly- laughter. This isn't just food. This is LIFE.

So, I think it would be more than appropriate to dedicate this blog entry to the memory of my Grandpa. It was, after all, his recipe - his passion for food that inspired my own passion.
There's Grandpa making -what else- Tamales!

Now - On to the recipe!

*Please Note! : I do not -repeat- do not measure things when it comes to cooking. The way I was taught, you cook with your senses and your heart. The only time I measure things is when I'm baking. Those kind of things you almost have to measure or you end up with bricks. I will try my best to give this recipe in measurements, but if you're a perfectionist who has to play by certain cooking rules - this recipe may not be for you. Maybe you should come on over to the dark side. Come on! Throw in a dash of salt! I promise... No one is looking :D

                                                         What are Tamales?
Glad you asked! For those of you that have never had the experience of a tamale, they are basically meat and chili wrapped in a corn husk that has been slathered in a corn paste mixture. If you're not familiar with them, it can sound a little odd- but I assure you. They are dee-licious. These tamales you can use pork, chicken or shredded beef. Most people use red chili, but us New Mexicans have been known to make them with our Hatch Green Chili. SO good, my stomach is growling just thinking about it.

When my Mom makes tamales - the look like this :

However -- The subject of today's blog are SWEET Tamales - kid friendly and kid approved. I made a batch last night.  Let me tell you how ...

                                                          STEP 1 : Ingredients!!

Can't make anything if you have nothing to make it with, right?

For this, you will need :
- Dried Corn Husks

-Masa (Cornmeal flour)

- Brown Sugar (Light or Dark)

- 1 can of Crushed Pineapple

- Raisins

 -Cinnamon Powder

-Water

 -Pineapple Juice *optional

              *   *   *   *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *

                                    STEP 2 : Prep!

The hojas or corn husks need to be lightly soaked in water, then halfway dried. This allows for the husk to be more manageable when it comes time to roll. You don't need to do this far in advance. Just make sure this is your first step.

*Take a few husks and tear them into strips. These will be used to tie the ends later.

Step 3 : Mix it, Mix it good!
(This part is so simple - it's gonna make you cringe)

-- Roll up your sleeves

-- Get yourself a bowl and a good mixin' spoon

-- Pour approx. 3 cups of masa into the bowl (Either brand on the right will do)

-- Slowly start to add water ( about 1/2 cup) and mix [If you want something even sweeter, you can substitute the water for pineapple juice - You call]

-- At this point, things should start coming together. Honestly, in the bowl it should    look like dirt and dust bunnies [gross, but accurate- hahaha]

-- Crack open that can of pineapple and pour the whole thing in there -YES. The whole thing even the juice.

-- Grab a large handful of raisins and toss them in there [maybe eat
a few while you're at it]

-- Pour in about 1/2 cup of brown sugar

-- Shake in some cinnamon. [ I shook the container back and forth 8 times]

              Now... MIX IT, BABY!

Don't be afraid to make faces or laugh at yourself. This adds some flavor that everyone will be able to taste. I figure - if food is fun to make, it's fun to eat.

Get everything blended so that it's about cookie dough batter thick

It's 'bout to get messy, Cap'n.

-- Throw a little of the dried masa on a clean surface

--Scrape out a ball of masa that's about the size of a lime

-- Roll it around lightly in the dried masa, then use your hands to roll it into a ball. Make sure no dried masa remains on the ball. It tastes gross.

-- Place the rolled ball in a husk and roll it, mami (or papi, if you're a dude reading this)

-- Use the strips to tie the husk at both ends

--Place your tamales in a steamer standing up. Usually, One side is wider than the other - wide side is best at the bottom. [My Mom has a really awesome steamer she bought at a Mexican market that's specifically for tamales. If you have one, Que Suave! If you don't - any kind of steamer will work. Just make sure you have enough room to accommodate everything or you'll have to do this in batches.]

-- Start on high heat and pay attention. Once the water starts to boil, lower it to medium heat and set the timer for one hour. Go off and check your email, send out twitter updates, comment on facebook statuses, let the dogs out to pee -whatever passes the time.. If you want, come back in 30-45 minutes and check one to see if they're done.

- A fully cooked tamale will still have somewhat of a gelatinous appearance. A fully cooked one should be firm, but still have a little give when you push it with your finger. If you're uncomfortable with the texture, keep steaming them till you get to a point where you feel comfortable.

--Yields approximately 2 dozen
It was still hot, but I couldn't resist taking a bite.

Well amigos, I hope I have explained things well enough for you to go out and give these a try. If there are questions you have, or need more info - feel free to message me!

Till next time....

 HAPPY EATING - HAPPY CRAFTING!

"L" is for the way you look at me ...

That's it! I'm in love with my newest crocheted giraffes! How could you not be?!

All this cuteness is almost too much to handle. It's almost a shame
I'll be mailing them out soon. Thankfully, I have enough yarn
to crank out a couple more. Both boys have been angry at me, because I wasn't allowing them to play with the giraffes.
What a mean Mommy I am. How dare I not let them play with toys. Curses!

Most people know I've been in a funk. It's a lot of the impending doom of Christmas. Which really, is an odd new feeling for me. Usually, I love this time of year.
I've also been struggling to find a sense of identity when it comes to the things that I make and sell. Any bum with a few dollars can do what I do, but I want the things I make to be mine. I want the pleasure of knowing that the stuff I create, came from the chocolate waterfall that makes my brain churn. I see the Etsy shops of people I know, and their things are AH-MAZING. I think

to myself, "I wish I could do that".
I CAN! I can do it.
I know I can. I've been lacking  self confidence. A good friend today told me, "chin up sweetie! the confidence is key... you'll find it."

Yesterday, I think I hit a turning point. I've been trying to brainstorm at any chance I get, to come up with a good idea of a thing or things I can sell in my Etsy shop year round. I don't think knit and crochet hats will fly in the dead heat of late July-Early August.
Amazingly, while doing the dishes, my muse woke from whatever nap she was taking, and threw 4 great ideas at me.
Got online and did a bit of research to see how many other people were making the things I'd come up with. Out of the four ideas, only one was being made by other people.
I really do with I could share these things with you right now, because they are pretty awesome ideas. For my own sake, I'm keeping these secret until I post them on Etsy. So, sit tight and keep your eyes peeled for some awesomeness!!

Since you took the time to read this blog post, I'm going to do something a  little special for you. During this month of December, I'm having a sale in my Etsy shop for 25% off everything.
You, being the dedicated reader you are, can take an extra 10% off!!  That's right. 35% off everything in the store. Just make sure you use the coupon BLOG35 at checkout.

Thanks for reading, and Happy Crafting!

It's a Hoot - Part deux!

Attempt #2 at making an owl ornament turned out my much better. It's closer to bulb size than the other grapefruit sized monster.

It's a Hoot

I wanted to crochet several Christmas ornaments. You know, for family members and a few other people. I got started one, and come to find out, my gauge was WAAAAAY off.

The first one came out nice, but....

...It's HUGE! Here it is next to a roll of toilet paper. You get the idea of the magnitude
of this beast. Hopefully next time, it will come out closer to the intended size.

Well, That's all for now. Back to the grind stone!

Down With The Sickness

There's been a nasty cold going around, one in particular that's been floating around our house for the last couple of weeks. Yesterday, however, I came down with was apparently a 24-hour stomach flu.
Today... I feel like i've been hit by a bus. It hurts to move, breathe, laugh, cough and think. I was foolish enough to think, "Hey, This would be a great time to get some work done, seeing as how I don't feel like doing anything that would require me to do much more than sitting". The boys went down for their afternoon nap, and I decided to make a 1 skein scarf for the craft fair. I'm about 95% done, the boys wake up from their nap, and I run off to the bathroom for no more than 2 minutes. I come back to the living room, and find that the boys had completely unraveled the scarf.

Why? Why today? Why that scarf? I'm already so unbelievably behind on my work. I know this must seem so petty to complain about.

Ugh. I'm even annoying myself. Lol That can't be good.

I need to stop setting unrealistic expectations for myself. It's like I subconsciously set myself up for failure. Why can't I just be happy being me? Why can't I just be happy ?

Off to watch Dancing With The Stars and do the dishes.
Talk you soon, My lovelies.
